Chapter Eight

A few nights later, Pierce eyed his partner as she entered P.L.A.S.M.A’s Miami satellite office in all her black splendor…minus the long coat. Mon Dieu! Smooth shoulders, bared by her skimpy halter, curved into an unobstructed succulent neck. Damn, she didn’t make resisting easy. Clued into him, despite the crowded lobby, she held his gaze and adjusted her steps to head toward him with a sensual smile teasing her lush lips.

Ferocious and swift, hunger hit his body in a duo attack. Son-of-a-bitch! Was it always going to be like this? Would he always have this reaction to Kit? His mouth watered and fangs appeared while arousal hardened his groin.

Yes, his mind screamed and body readily concurred. Great. By the time this mission ended, he was going to need therapy…and lots of it.

He cursed his weakness and worked fervently to regain control of his body. Only when his fangs retracted did he allow his gaze to stray back to his partner. He watched her approach with detached interest.

She appeared well rested—no taut skin or dark circles—still, he knew the female’s death the other night and the suspect’s death last night weighed heavily on her mind. She had made the right decision to enter the warehouse without backup. He had been wrong. And last night, she had shielded two bodies—taking several bullets in the process. There was nothing more she could’ve done.

It was he who should’ve been covering the suspect. But now, the point was mute. He straightened from the concrete wall.

“There you are, Kit.” He made an effort to keep his tone neutral. “I was beginning to wonder if you’d gotten my message.”

“Yes, I got your voice mail: Meet me at Tooley’s lab when you get up. I got up, so here I am.” Hands out at her sides, hair swinging past her elbows, she approached with a grin. “I noticed you called twice. Did you miss me?”

Heaven help me, I did.

He’d barely slept, and when he had, her kiss—her taste—had invaded his dreams, tantalizing his body until he woke up hard and throbbing. But, falling into step alongside her in the wide hall, crowded with technicians and other agents, he kept the information to himself. “Yeah, I missed you…about as much as a thick, sharp wooden stake.”

Her grin broadened as she tipped her head sideways to look up at him. “Ah, but you did miss me.”

Damn, she was cute.

“Hey, Pierce,” a voice called out from the crowd.

He turned to spot his good friend, Agent Bitten. Ever the flirt, the fellow vampire did a double take at Kit before he raked her up and down with an admiring green gaze.

“Man, I heard you had a new partner, but no one told me she was drop-dead gorgeous!”

Blood from breakfast simmered in Pierce’s veins. Why did he suddenly feel like punching the wall?

“Oh yeah, she’s all that,” he said, his voice a bit colder than intended.

Kit glanced at him through narrowed eyes a split second before her attention returned to Bitten. Hands linked behind her back, she waltzed around his friend, steps deliberate, gaze focused.
